You may remember an earlier post about our resident ‘freeloaders’ – the two fishing rods that have been on board from the outset and had, up to now, not delivered a single fish.
Well today, they redeemed themselves!
We were making passage between Kilini and Catacolon with both rods trawling out the back, as they had been on every other passage. Our expectations were low, but Scott had got into the routine of setting the lines.
A couple of hours into the trip I heard one of the lines spinning.
Scott – you’ve got a fish on! The excitement was rather short-lived. While Scott was reeling in, thinking: ‘This is a big one!’, the line suddenly jerked and went slack. Drats – the line had broken! We were nevertheless encouraged that the lure had done its job and almost gave us supper.
Not to worry – Scott went to check the other line and ‘Whato! We’ve got one on this line!’ And what a beauty it was. A mackerel we believe, a lovely silver fish around 20 cm in length.
Anyone who is squeamish about fish should look away now!
An hour later the poor blighter was on the BBQ! Seasoned with lemon and pepper on toast for our lunch.
Thank you freeloaders! (We may need to reconsider your name).
